There was a box outside my door the next day and all I could do was look at it like it was a bomb ready to explode. I hadn't ordered anything, but the box clearly stated my name and address. It wasn't a small box either, which made my hackles rise that much more.

I didn't have many enemies. A few, yes, and a lot that didn't really care for me. But none of those people knew my address.

I kicked the box, half expecting it to explode in my face, but it only slid forward. I knelt down and listened, waiting for ticking or some sort of noise to come from it as my eyes scanned around my house.

I wasn't paranoid normally, but what were the chances of me getting a gift right after I started helping Lucian again?

I cut open the box and opened it carefully, then squinted at the contents. There were clothes inside, all new and wrapped in plastic. I moved the top pieces aside, and saw more. At the bottom of the box, there was a note.

Nova,

This is just a thank you in advance for helping. Kyler says he saw your size in shirts, and I guessed on the leggings. And, before you ask, the answer is no...you can't just return them. Wear them, or don't, that's up to you. I would have just gotten you candy but I've never seen you eat so I'm not sure what you like.

There's a dress at the bottom you'll need to wear tonight. I need you to go back to the club. I had Kenna look at your size when she wired you the last time. Sorry. Kind of.

I'll see you soon.

Lucian

I was going to kill him.

I picked the box up and took it inside. I set it on the table and picked the dress out of the box, unwrapping it and groaning.

I thought the outfit I wore last time was too much, but this one looked a hell of a lot shorter than my last dress. It also had cut out sides, which would expose most of my back and stomach. It was also strapless.

I picked up my phone.

Me: Absolutely not on the dress.

I put the tiny piece of fabric back in the box and watched as the message icon popped up on my phone.

Lucian: Why not? I think it's nice.

I scoffed.

Me: For a hooker.

Lucian: Wear it or wear nothing. Just know, you won't be leaving your house if you decide on the latter.

I stared at the message like I read it wrong. So I re-read it, then set the phone down on the counter next to the box.

What the hell was I supposed to say to that? Naomi would have told me to answer the door naked later that night, standing ready for him to do just what he insinuated. But that wasn't who I was. The implications made me squirm, and that feeling for something other than human was foreign to me.

So I put the dress on and did what I could with my hair in the time that I had.

I had no idea if Lucian was just messing with me, or if he was actually implying what I thought he was. I didn't want to get it wrong, act on it, and end up getting rejected and laughed at.

The doorbell rang as I slid on my shoes, and I opened the door.

Lucian and Kenna's eyes both fell down my body, then came back up. A flicker of something odd passed Lucian's face, but he quickly hid it and let himself inside.

"Today the wire is just an earpiece," he said, holding the small contraption up between us. "It's just a mic. You still won't be able to hear us."

Smart, since vampires could hear incredibly well. And if I ran into Kieran again, anything of "interest" would be seen and heard.

Also the dress I had to wear wasn't exactly wire friendly.

"Good thing I didn't decide on the latter." I glanced at Kenna, then back at him. "That would have been awkward."

"You can still change your mind," he said.

"Your sentinel needs me to find him," I responded. "Maybe after we've found him."

Kenna took the earpiece from Lucian and went to work on putting it in my ear.

Lucian's eyes went dark. "That a promise?"

Jesus. He wasn't kidding, was he? I couldn't delude myself into thinking it was all a joke when he looked at me like that. The fact of the matter was, I liked it. The looks he gave me, the slow perusal like he wanted to eat me, and the ultimatum from earlier.

I knew he wanted to find Jason, that much was abundantly clear. On top of that though, I think he actually wanted me in some form of the word. I doubted he wanted any sort of relationship with me, being what I was, but he did want something.

I cringed when the earpiece went in. It felt like it went too far, so close to my ear drum that I could feel it.

"Sorry," she said. "It has to be in there far enough where no one can see it if they look at a certain angle. Can you hear out of that ear?"

"Yes," I said, my eyes on Lucian.

His breath stopped completely, even as Kenna continued to fiddle with the remote for the earpiece. She was none the wiser, but Lucian knew the answer wasn't just for her.

If he wanted me, then fine. I'd do exactly what Naomi wanted me to do and branch out. I didn't think he and I would become anything more than sex partners for a short time, even after this whole thing with Jason was sorted out. And that was fine with me. I didn't want a relationship. I wasn't ready for that yet with anyone.

When he finally breathed again, he turned his head away to hide the light glow behind his eyes from Kenna. He took in a deep breath, held it, then closed his eyes before letting it out slowly.

Interesting.

And here I thought the alpha of the Crimson Shadow Pack wouldn't stoop so low as to fuck a vampire - half or not.

I guess I was wrong.
