"The Original Sin"

Long ago, an alien seedling fell from the sky and implanted itself into the earth. This sapling eventually grew into a gigantic tree. Humankind worshipped this tree as a godly entity that provided life to the planet. Those who dare go near it, whether to cause harm or otherwise, fall prey to the fog that protects it. As the trespassers lose consciousness, the tree punishes them by taking their bodies using its roots. What truly happens to these people remain unknown but many believe they died as penance.

Henceforth, it was aptly called the God Tree.

However, most of this information are actually either false or misguided half-truths.

The God Tree does not provide life to the planet, but drains it. The roots spread across the land and sea, absorbing all the energy in the world. While doing so, it also records the biological information of the planet as if to learn and adapt. This parasitic creature eventually became strong enough to protect itself, which is why it eats any creature that goes near it. It started from blood and corpses on the battlefield, but evolved to hunting all living things in close proximity by using its roots.

However, the planet itself fought back to survive.

To bring back order, five celestial deities were created to bond with the leeching tree. Their forms were the persona of nature, masterpieces of beauty and ancient power. Their spirits carried the aspects of life and death, capable of neither creation nor destruction. These sentient beings held only one purpose, and that is to contain the God Tree from completely devouring the planet.

The five gods were known as follows:

Genbu, the Black Tortoise of the North. His primary element is earth but capable of wielding water as rain, controlling the weather to his bidding. The seasonal essence of his soul is winter. His form stands for endurance, longevity, balance, and wisdom. Legends speak of him as the one who brings blessings of strength and knowledge.

Seiryuu, the Azure Dragon of the East. His primary element is water but capable of manipulating wood, a merger with the earth. The seasonal essence of his soul is spring. His form stands for resilience, fortitude, healing, and benevolence. He is spoken as the war god that guarantees wealth and fertility.

Suzaku, the Vermillion Phoenix of the South. His primary element is fire but shows compatibility with wind due to his ability of flight. The seasonal essence of his soul is summer. His form represents rebirth, good fortune, bravery, and passion. Many deem him as the god that grants vitality and luck.
