He pushed the shopping cart as the nine year old rode on the front of it talking his big brothers ear off and Toby how silent Lotus has been since pulling up to the Walmart for the painting equipment she would need to start working on the wall mural for his family room.
"You aight?" his question averted her to stare at him, "You been quiet the whole way hea'."
"Yeah, it's just..." Lotus paused with a sigh, "I don't want to bother you with my problems."
"Aye, I'm all ears; talk to me."
Lotus sighed as she closed her eyes briefly. "Since I moved to California I've always known who my mother was. I met my biological Grandfather first at my high school graduation. He was nice and very welcoming. I've been trying to find the right way to approach her and when I first met her, it wasn't good. She pulled away from me like I disgusted her."
"Do she kno' you kno'?"
"When we first met she had no clue. At least I don't think." the nineteen year old assumed, "She just looked at me when she shook my hand and pulled away from me. After that, every time she sees me she has this aura to her. Like I said as if I disgust her. I finally tell her I know who she is and she still dismisses me. I should've just stayed on the other side of the coast and just said fuck her."
"Welcome to the shitty mothers club." Troy commented, overhearing their conversation.
"Sadly," Lotus shook her head. "All I want from her is to tell me why she gave me away when she comes from a wealthy family. Or why didn't she give me to my birth father?" she wondered, firing questions. "I mean I love my Dads I want to know where I come from and she won't even give me the time of day."
Toby shook his head turning cart into the paint aisle. "All I can tell you babygirl is no matta' how much you love a person you can't force 'em to be in yo' life. It's possible she do gotta good ass reason for lettin' somebody else raise you. Or the reason could be jack shit. She gave you up for her own selfish reasons but I'll tell you like I tell my son's; don't give the person who left you behind the power. Don't let 'em see you cry or yell; do that in yo' car. Those type of parents don't deserve to witness you at your weak point."
