You ducked out of the hall as soon as class was over, not wanting to have to talk to Tercero. He'd looked really mad for the rest of the class; shooting you nasty looks with his arms crossed over his chest. You hadn't paid him much mind though, too heady from having pulled off your plan.

Outside, the sun was shining, the birds were chirping and Alex, Nieve and Reyes were sitting on one of the benches by the road, chatting amongst themselves. You headed over to them, slightly confused.

"What are you guys doing here?" You asked, stopping in front of them.

Instead of answering your question, Alex shot up, grabbing your hands and squeezing. "How did it go?"

"It went really well." You said. "You still didn't answer my question though-"

"We wanted to come congratulate you and see how it went!" Nieve said. "You worked so hard on it, and you were so nervous, that I thought going out to lunch with some friends after would be nice."

You smiled. "That actually would be really nice." You said. "You guys are amazing-"

"Y/N, what the hell?"

You looked towards the door of the building to see Tercero emerging from the hall, starting towards you. Your stomach sank - this is not something you wanted to deal with in front of Alex, Nieve and Reyes. This was not something you wanted to deal with at all, actually.

You just smiled, and turned to Tercero when he stopped beside you. "Tercero, this is Nieve, my cousin, and-"

"What the hell was that?" He hissed, gesturing back into the hall. "I looked like an absolute idiot up there. What did you do with the stuff I wrote down?"

You saw Reyes and Nieve stand up from the bench out of the corner of your eye. You took a breath and turned to Tercero. "I think it says more that you didn't even know I changed anything until you saw the slides in class." You said. "The changes had been made since Monday, Tercero-"

"I don't give a shit about when you made the changes, you made me look like I didn't even help, or do anything for the project as all!" He said. "Do you want me to fail this class?"

"Kind of, yes!" You said. "I didn't make you look like you didn't do anything for the project, you just actually didn't do anything for the project! It's your own fault that you looked like an idiot up there-"

Tercero's eyes flashed dark, and one of his hands rose up, poised like he was about to hit you. You flinched. closing your eyes and bracing yourself, but the hit never came. Instead, Tercero shouted.

You opened your eyes to see Tercero clutching his nose to stop the blood from dripping onto him, and Alex, with his knuckles smeared in blood and an angry snarl etched onto his face.

"Son of a bitch!" Tercero shouted. "What the fuck-"

"You were going to hit Y/N, motherfucker!" Alex shouted.

You grabbed his shoulder to prevent him from hitting Tercero again. You needn't have though, because Reyes stepped between you and Tercero, and Nieve rounded on him, cursing him out faster than you could follow, and backing him away from you with angry shouting and waving her arms in the air, drawing all the attention to Tercero.

Alex put a hand on your shoulder, turning you towards him. "Are you okay?"

"Are you?" You asked, reaching to examine his hand. "Your knuckles are already starting to bruise... how hard did you hit him?"

"I don't know, but I really hope I didn't break his nose." Alex said. "I don't want to have to pay for that."

You sighed out a laugh and hugged him close to you, pressing your face into the crook of his neck. "Thank you."

"It's not a big deal." Alex said.

"It is a big deal." You insisted.

"It really isn't." He said. "When you think about a thing enough, it kind of loses it's novelty."

You smiled. "You thought about hitting him a lot?"

"Of course." Alex said, like it should have been obvious. "I mean, what kind of guy just wears one earring? And just the way you talked about him made me think he was a jerk - not to mention meeting the guy at the restaurant that one night, oh my god-"

You laughed and pressed a kiss to Alex's lips, a silent thank you.

Eventually Nieve returned, looking disgruntled. You pulled away from Alex as she stormed up to you, checking to see if you were alright.

"You're okay?" She asked.

You nodded. "I'm okay."

Nieve huffed angrily. "What kind of boy would try to hit someone over a project he didn't even do? I can't believe you just let him act like that! If he had been my friend, I... I would just not have stayed friends with him."

"Well, I'm never going to talk to him again." You said. "I can't believe he was actually going to hit me."

"Thank you Alex." Nieve said, taking one of his hands and squeezing. "You were so brave-"

"It was more of a gut reaction, but I'll take it." Alex said.

You glanced around the area, to see the rest of the students milling about, whispering to each other as they glanced over at you and your friends. Their stares were hungry and made your stomach turn - you were sure you were going to be the talk of the school.

"Can we get out of here?" You asked, turning to Nieve and Reyes.

Nieve glanced around as well before answering. "That would probably be good idea. Where'd we park?" She turned to Reyes.

Reyes lead the trek back to Nieve's car. You grabbed a hold of Alex's hand and laced your fingers together as you walked, enjoying the comforting weight of his hand in yours. You were sure that by tomorrow, his knuckles would be purpled beyond all belief, but for now, you were grateful that he had been with you.

You wouldn't have asked for anyone else by your side.
