En las frías llanuras del norte, Frieren y su grupo se detuvieron ante un hombre que sostenía una lanza antigua. No era un humano; su presencia emanaba la pesadez de los siglos. El Lancero observaba a Fern y a Stark con una mezcla de lástima y confusión. - "Frieren," -dijo él- "he visto morir a miles de ellos. No entiendo por qué se esfuerzan en ser felices si su vida es un parpadeo. ¿Es que deciden ignorar que su final está a la vuelta de la esquina?" Frieren guardó silencio, recordando la sonrisa de Himmel. El Lancero continuó, clavando su arma en la tierra: - "He decidido creer en algo nuevo. Quizás su muerte no es un adiós, sino un 'hasta luego'. He llegado a pensar que la vida humana es solo el prólogo de un libro infinito. Ellos no ignoran el final; simplemente saben que lo que viene después de cerrar la página es lo que realmente importa." Aquellas palabras resonaron en Frieren. Entendió que su viaje a Aureole no era una despedida, sino la transición al siguiente capítulo. Se separaron en silencio: Frieren hacia el Norte, buscando el final de ese prólogo, y el Lancero hacia el Sur, hacia el Reino donde todo empezó. Al llegar a la capital, el guerrero se sentó frente a la estatua de Himmel. Al ver a los niños jugar a sus pies, comprendió que el héroe no se había ido; su vida breve fue la semilla de una felicidad que no moriría nunca. Por primera vez en milenios, el Lancero soltó su arma y sonrió, aceptando que, aunque su propia vida fuera larga, la verdadera magia residía en saber que nadie se va del todo.
