“I have five REALLY fit guys stalking me and I have no idea what to do about it!” According to most modern teenage literature, this was not a dilemma that Gabby was supposed to be disturbed by. It was supposed to be romantic. In fact, in the words of one of Gabby’s best friends, the moral of most books for Gabby’s age would be: “well, pick one, then. You can’t have all five.” In significantly different circumstances, Gabby might have been able to – or even wanted to – take that advice. Sadly, said “different circumstances” would include romantic interest, different personalities, and a lack of aliens trying to take over the world. Gabby is not cut out to save the world. In fact, the only way that she can save it would simultaneously be one of the best ways to destroy it. Her five protectors could well end up protecting her from the very thing that they are supposed to be protecting her for. Alea jacta est: Gabby’s fate is completely out of her hands, and the fate of everybody else rests with her whimsical decisions. Such is the tightrope of life.
