Cade Stillwater has a lot to learn about the real world. The privileged rich boy gets caught up in the wrong mess, landing him in jail. His parents bail him out and, to avoid the public stink eye, exile him to their family lake for six months. He needs to learn his lesson, but how will he do that when all he can do is be angry in isolation?

Enter Liam. Liam is a timid soul, though his appearance would say otherwise. When he joins Cade as a partner at the lake operation, the gears start to turn for Cade. He learns what it's like to be from the lower class and what scraping by really is. Cade and Liam form a bond unexplainable, where they realize they offer something they both need from each other:

Someone to relate to.

When Charlie gets away from his drug dealing father and is sent to live with his grandparents, things aren't suddenly okay. Charlie's broken. He's not sure he ever wasn't broken. When things get unbearable, the only thing that helps Charlie feel grounded is music. What can he do when he runs out of batteries for his old walkman? At school crowds of people gather to watch Travis perform, but when he goes home his only company is his cat. He escaped his abusive parents, but now he lives with his older brother who is usually away working. Will the strange, quiet boy he finds sitting on his porch trying to listen in on his music put an end to his loneliness?
