Two years after journeying to the Cat Kingdom of Aelurus, fifteen, almost sixteen-year-old, Abbernathy Tells has grown accustomed to a new way of living. Freshly settled in Ean, the manufacturing capital of Mirea, she lives her day-to-day tending to dying plants, delving into the complex world of alchemic enhancements and supplying the locals with steaming cups of tea. Though she's living a relatively normal life alongside her cousin, Lucy, Abby's not forgotten the heavy toll her journey to Aelurus exacted- she's lost friends to violence and family to fire.  

As the second anniversary of the fire nears, Abby and Lucy set out for Laos, where they'll remember the deceased surrounded by acquaintances and some enemies-turned-friends. Abby's excited to reconnect with the people she hasn't seen recently, but when one of them is a no-show, it throws her world back into chaos. All is not well in Aelurus. Tensions run high as the Cloudians continue to seek refuge within the land. With the promise of war on the horizon, Abby must once again don her ivory shoes, discover the truth, and kick the bad guys in their crotches.
