Kait Harmon is a second gen, daughter of first gens who saw the spread of a sexually transmitted disease that resulted in victims developing "super powers" in the 1970s. Now almost 40 years later, things in the US have changed dramatically. A wall divides the "diseased" territory from that of the "normals," and the militaristic government has sent soldiers into the territory to collect third gens, illegally conceived by second gens.   And Kait is about to go on a trip that will change her perspective. As she travels with a co-worker and group of soldiers, she becomes shocked by the things she learns and wonders which side of the wall is truly civilized.
