Clove has never experienced freedom before. Never had a life outside of the cell. Never been afraid. She doesn't know who her parents are or why she was locked up in the skybox. No one would tell her what happened. She doesn't remember a time before being locked up. All she knows is that cell. Her fate determined for her.
On the verge of 18 she knows that her time has come but she's not afraid or scared. Why would she be? There is nothing for her to lose, nothing for her to miss, no one to remember her once she's gone. The night before her 18th birthday Clove is ready to be free, to finally escape the reality of life but freedom comes in a different form. In stead of being floated she is sent to the ground with 99 other criminals.
Finally living a life outside the cell, she navigates the new world of freedom on the ground and the challengers that come with it.
