Hannah Jergen was raised by a submissive father and overly-pious, sex-hating Catholic mother. Her upbringing drilled into her but two paths available to her-become a nun, or live the rest of her days as the perfectly-agreeable wife. Failing miserably as a nun after entering a convent for a short time, she separates from her vows and marries the first man she ever really dated. At thirty-two, she's been united in marriage with Peter Jergen for five years. He has been her only sexual partner. Unusually attached to his mother, Peter is undemonstrative, except for the now-and-then unsatisfactory marital coupling.
Uninhibited Georgi has been Hannah's best friend since their Boston childhood. She believes Hannah is too meek and dependent on her cold husband. On everyone but her, really. She makes it her mission to introduce Hannah to the exciting varieties life could offer if Hannah would loosen up. Georgi revels in her self-designated job as Hannah's life coach.
A chance meeting and startling attraction between Hannah and world-famous pop singer, Denny Lorenzo, who is Jewish born and raised, changes both of their lives forever. His performance schedule takes him to Boston where Hannah sees him live on stage. Both seem unable to shed their miserable marriages, but neither can they deny the magnetism between them. Their experiences and worlds are polar opposites. Through furtive meetings facilitated by Hannah's ever-faithful friend, Georgi, their growing emotional attachment becomes life-threatening after accidents and mysterious illnesses begin following their every move. Ultimately their worlds collide in a shocking confrontation. Everything started during those weekends in New England....
