~ Das' long stride forced me to trail behind as he walked out of the ostentatious restaurant and to the parking lot.
" All you had to do was sit and eat, maybe nod politely at the odd phrase, that's it Amaras"

His piercing words and harsh tone, were gritted out through a clenched jaw. I'd never seen him this upset before but I couldn't help my own hackles raising at the accusatory words.

" Because standing by and watching as someone I care about is insulted is the norm for a family dinner." I attempted to flick my hair out of my eyes as I said my piece.

A cold gaze cut back towards me, Das' frown twisting his face into something harsh and dangerous as he glanced back to meet my eyes.

"They're family, you of all people should understand that."~

Amaras stopped seeing herself as something worthy of love a long time. All she wants to do is enjoy the time spent away from her tumultuous home life, and maybe embarrass herself a little less every time she speaks to a stranger.

Das is tired. So fucking tired of being alone and unaccepted by the only family he's ever known. Each day feels more and more unbearable as he struggles to prove himself. Meanwhile the constricting vines and sharp thorns of his own family history seem ready to devour him whole.

Amaras and Das may not be looking for each other but circumstances force them together time and time again. Both have jagged edges and painful scars. It's just a matter of who walks away, while the other bleeds out.

"Ava, now!" Virin's voice sliced through the suffocating darkness, sharp and urgent.
