virago (n.) - a strong, brave, or warlike woman; a woman who demonstrates exemplary and heroic qualities

Samantha Reed has never had anything handed to her when it came to soccer. She has worked hard for everything she has accomplished, and by the time the summer before her senior year came, she had NCAA Division I offers lined up and scouts from professional clubs and the US Soccer Federation watching her play in her hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan. Her life was falling into place, and she was ready to finish out her senior year and head to the best schools to play the sport she fell in love with.

Until her father took the job opportunity of a lifetime, forcing them to move.

Her world was flipped upside down, and she did not know what to do. She tried everything she could to stay at the high school she was at, but her father denied every plea she gave. She was now moving to the middle of nowhere in the northern thumb of Michigan. She would have to make all new friends and hopefully still be able to keep her university offers.

But that was going to be impossible when there were not enough girls to make up a girls team.

Follow Samantha Reed through her journey in VIRAGO.

After being recruited by Wolfsburg after the 2019 World Cup, Mila Bakker was determined to become the best forward of her age. After being named the Young Player of the Tournament, there was no doubt that she was on her way, with the Dutch, right-winger becoming a staple within not just the national team but also the highly competitive Wolfsburg squad. In 2020, after the disrupted season that left Mila questioning almost everything, new faces joined the Wolfsburg team, including German midfielder, Lena Oberdorf. With Mila's larger-than-life personality and Lena's down-to-earth spirit, both players found an unlikely friendship, despite the light bickering, and when Germany once again shut down, the two found themselves as roommates, trying to survive the lockdown together. With Mila always sneaking around the rules, and Lena having to come to her rescue more often than not, tensions began to brew between the two. At the national team, Mila's long-time best friend, Jill Roord, was dealing with her own problems, and after two seasons at Arsenal, she returned to Germany, to play alongside her best friend and Dutch teammate, meeting someone unexpected along the way. Yet, despite Mila's ever-giving love and compassion, there are pains that lie within her past. There are childhood hurts that are present throughout her adult life. After leaving her home country forever, and seeing her family ripped apart in front of her eyes, Mila's trust in others is never too strong. The love she has always seems to fail her. The heart others give, she can never give back. And it takes one determined person to help bring her out of that. You're On Your Own, Kid is the final installment of the Swiftly Pitched series, representing that it is important to depend on those who love you and that the friends you hold dearest may always bring surprises. Kelsey Beattie, a 24-year-old professional footballer from Scotland, faces a significant crossroads in her career. As the football season draws to a close, her contract with Manchester United is also nearing its end. Presented with two distinct paths, each with its own set of challenges, Kelsey must carefully weigh her options. One option entails a transfer to Arsenal, where her sister, Jen, currently plays. The familial connection adds a compelling element to this choice, yet it is not without its challenges. The alternative involves returning to her roots in Scotland to join Glasgow City, a decision that would require her to rebuild her career from scratch. Despite being able to be closer to her sister at Arsenal, Kelsey faces an obstacle in the form of her longstanding rival, Leah Williamson, who also competes for the same team. Unbeknownst to Kelsey, the animosity between her and Leah runs deep, raising questions about the potential for a harmonious relationship on the field. Will Kelsey do what's best for her career, or will she let feelings get in the way? 🥇 No. 1 - #leah 🥇 No. 1 - #lionesses 🥇 No. 1 - #jenbeattie 🥇 No. 1 - #arsenal 🥇 No. 1 - #womensfootball 🥇 No. 1 - #arsenalwomen 🥇 No. 1 - #leahwilliamson 🥇 No. 1 - #england 🥇 No. 1 - #williamson 🥇 No. 1 - #woso 🥇 No. 1 - #arsenalfc 🥇 No. 1 - #newstory 🥇 No. 1 - #manunited 🥇 No. 1 - #lesbianromance
