It made your eyes burn with unshed tears and it twisted your stomach into knots. And it was because of this, she did not notice the crack in her fathers' voice as he comforted her mother, nor protest against the arms of her grandmother as she carried her to her room. How long had she stood silently and watched her watch her parents?'

I wanted to explore the concepts of mourning the living, mourning a stolen childhood and how genocide and war cause a ripple effect of pain that lasts for generations.

I also wanted to see how these concepts drive the decisions in not just the protagonists of the story but also the antagonists.
