Will Byers and Mike Wheeler were practically inseparable. They had been best friends for nearly a decade and planned to remain that way for eternity. Nobody was capable of destroying the unique bond they shared except for Will's step-sister, Eleven.
She wasn't intentionally trying to sabotage
their friendship. In fact, she had no knowledge
about Will's massive crush on Mike. However, when Mike flew to California for spring break, she wanted him all to herself. He seemed to be perfectly fine with that. He loved her more than anyone - or so Will thought.
After El is brought to a top-secret location to regain her telekinetic powers, Mike is finally able to spend some time with Will. Her absence is enough to make him realize that she isn't the one he loves after all.
