"There were dragons when I was a boy..."
Those first words that Julian Moriyama-Haddock read in that old, dusty book would change his life forever.
It's been thousands of years since dragons vanished from the world, forgotten and thought of as myths. Except on one small, seemingly normal island- New Berk. The people there have inhabited those towering cliffs for as long as anyone can remember, descending from Vikings who are said to have arrived there upon the backs of dragons- If you believe the legends, of course. While the rest of the world builds up massive cities with towers that reach the clouds and lights you can see from the moon, New Berk has happily settled with their small cliff-side village surrounded by an abundance of nature.
While not many actually believe in dragons, the people of New Berk still keep the memory of them integrated into their daily lives, with folktales passed on from generation to generation and ancient statues depicting the legendary beasts. Julian grew up on these tales, and while they made great stories to tell to his younger cousins, he never quite believed them.
But that all changes when a team of scientists known as AEOLUS build a research facility on the island, searching to uncover the secrets of the gargantuan, collapsed underwater crater that lies a few miles away from New Berk. But in pursuit of these secrets, they end up discovering much more than they bargained for. Big, winged, fire-breathing reptiles. Dragons- hundreds of them.
After the quite literal crumbling of the crater drilling project, Julian manages to stumble upon an old memoir that tells not only the hidden history of his family- but also something that could change the world. The secrets to training the dragons. When the Hidden World starts to crumble and die, and exterminators are sent to eliminate all of dragonkind, will everything lie on Julian's shoulders and the knowledge he's uncovered?
