Alouette's hand clenches around the letter opener.

The two guards at the other end of the room step forward, ready to intervene, but Harry halts them with a raise of his hand.

"Don't worry." His eyes bore into Alouette's from above, and a sardonic smile curves his lips. "She won't do it."

The world Alouette has traded her life for is made of lies. The secret organisation that constitutes her father's legacy has fallen apart, her friend has been keeping himself locked in his room for days and refuses to talk to her, and the man she risked it all to save has taken her trust and repaid her with the ashes of her past.

Worst of all, her sister is missing.

Stuck in the Palace, Alouette is reeling. Between the guilt waiting to consume her, the secrets lurking around the corner, and the verses in her father's handwriting hidden in mysterious books, she doesn't know where to turn.

As if it wasn't enough, the shadows of Northfair are rising, threatening to take over the little she has left.

She needs to take action - but who can she trust?
