He arrives on a rocky island lost in the middle of the ocean, where is located a strange and abandoned lighthouse. At the top, he finds a strange cabin with a seat. When he enters, he is trapped and catapulted into the sky, and arrives in a floating city above the clouds, Columbia. Shortly after his arrival, he was captured and imprisoned under the orders of the prophet Zachary Comstock, who seems to reign over this place. While he should be executed, Mathias is saved by Elizabeth Comstock, a beautiful young woman, and the daughter of Zachary. Together, Elizabeth and Mathias become fugitives and have to escape the forces that are chasing them, also with the presence of Songbird, a strange giant robotic bird that only Elizabeth seems able to control, besides the appearance of Robert and Rosalind Lutece, a mysterious duo of scientists who seem to have a link with the town of Columbia.
