The Chinese folklore is about a magical connection between two people that are destined to be soulmates, called 'the red string of fate'. The two people connected by the red thread are destined lovers, regardless of time, place, or circumstance. 

The red string of fate is what most people in life see, it makes a clear path to the one you are destined to be with for the rest of your life. 

Although there are outliers who never see the beautiful color of red tied to their fingers.

Instead these outliers have a harder thing to see such as their names written on each other's bodies, the first words they say to each other, seeing color after meeting, a unique tattoo they both share, a timer, and even more that hasn't been experimented with.
