An excerpt from Sonia Magnolia's Galar: A History

"...Galar's battling league originates from the Kinghand system. The Kinghand system originates from the great chain of being, a doctrine and tool used during the Raron and Darin eras to both organize creation, and to justify classes and the inequality between classes.

The great chain of being organized creation from God down, and where humans stood, there were subdivisions. Under the monarch-who stood closest to God-were the nobility, and within the nobility, a few were born with the sole purpose to be wielders. A number of them, most usually five (Thus the name Kinghand), would be taken as property of the monarch. These Kinghands would then oversee the wielders owned by the nobility, along with religious responsibilities the monarch would not have been able to tend to.

Of course, there would soon develop a hierarchy within the wielder subclass directed by how much their potential could impress the Kinghands, which is where we get the minor and major divisions in modern Galar..."
