Matka Wschodu Europy - tak czasem mówiła o sobie z ironią, ale była to ironia pełna goryczy. Polska, kraj zniszczony wojnami i przez długie lata zniewolony, w czasach komunizmu próbowała poukładać odłamki swojej duszy. Czy taki kraj może mieć jeszcze uczucia? Najwidoczniej może. Widziała kraje dookoła - zmagające się z własnymi problemami, zagubione w cieniach przeszłości i ciężarze teraźniejszości. W obliczu ich rozpaczy starała się otoczyć je sympatią, pokazać, że nawet w największym mroku jest miejsce na nadzieję.
Skąd brała tę siłę? Sama zadawała sobie to pytanie. Może było to echo jej własnych traum, blizn pozostawionych przez rozbiory, wojny i dekady zniewolenia. Może właśnie dlatego chciała być tym, czego sama nigdy nie miała - opoką, matczyną miłością, która potrafi ukoić nawet najbardziej rozdarte serce.
