Godwin was the son of Uhtred, Ealdorman of Bebbanburg, but his father never looked at him, never noticed his mere existence, for he was born to be nothing but a spare. Life was cruel from the very start, taking his mother from him before he even had a chance to be held by her, forcing him under the protection of a man that had eyes only on his heir. The third surviving son, Godwin was not meant for great things. It was one thing he knew he and his brother Osbert had in common, for they only existed, 'just in case' they were needed.

Until the day Osbert was, in fact, needed, and he became Uhtred, son of Uhtred.

The next thing he knew, Godwin of Bebbanburg no longer existed, and Rorik Ragnarson had taken his place.
