Akira Mado and Amon are assigned to look into a significant drug case involving ghouls and their trafficking of narcotics which intensify their already powerful kagunes. Following this case they find themselves immersed in a culture of violence and manipulation, adversity, hierarchies, hatred and the sheer gruesomeness that is the product of depravity, desperation and ruthlessness. They eventually come to realize the depth of morality people will descend to in order to attain power and hedonism. They also come to realize the beauty in life despite strife and the love and compassion  that can come from those who have nothing. To complete this case they must reciprocate trust in each other which then evolves into something more intimate.
