I fell in love with her in high school.
We were best friends, the kind who believed we would always be part of each other's lives. Until, sometime after our second year, she dropped out of school.
She was pregnant.
And then, without a goodbye, she disappeared.
For ten years, I never knew why.
What happened to her?
Why did she leave without saying a word?
And why didn't she ever come back?
Life moved on. We grew older, built separate lives, and became strangers who once knew everything about each other.
Then, ten years later, I saw her again.
For me, it felt like fate.
For her, it was probably just boredom.
I thought the feelings I had for her in high school had disappeared a long time ago. I thought ten years was enough to bury a first love.
I was wrong.
She had never dated a woman. As far as I knew, she had never looked at women the way I looked at her.
So I kept my feelings to myself.
Instead, I tried to rebuild what we had lost.
I wanted to make up for the ten years she had spent away. I wanted to be there for her, not only because I loved her, but because somewhere inside me, I still felt guilty for losing my best friend.
And her two children became part of my life too.
Little by little, we found our way back to each other.
Friendship became something more.
And eventually, we started dating.
But loving someone is easy when you only have to fight your feelings.
What happens when you have to fight her past, her fears, her children, her family and the truth about why she disappeared in the first place?
Ten years ago, she left without saying goodbye.
Now I finally have the chance to ask her
What did she leave behind?
