The Truth Behind Black Cats
Author: Elle
Set in 1898 Cebu, Philippines, in the narrow alleyways of Saint Joseph Patriarch Church, this historical tale unpacks the deep-rooted superstition surrounding black cats during Spanish colonial rule. The air smells of coral stone and drying fish, and locals freeze in fear whenever they spot Sabel - a sleek black cat with glowing amber eyes. For generations, people have believed Spanish folklore that black cats bring misfortune, bad luck, and harm to the city. Only one man dares to see the truth: Mang Alberto, who cares for stray cats and knows they are gentle, harmless creatures.
Conflict erupts when Spanish soldiers arrive, declaring they will "eliminate all misfortune" by rounding up and removing every black cat in the city - including Sabel. Mang Alberto is furious and heartbroken, but instead of fighting with anger, he gathers a group of townspeople and bravely confronts the soldiers. In a calm, steady voice, he challenges their beliefs: the cats have lived peacefully among them for years; bad luck and hardship come from human actions, not innocent animals.
The soldiers take time to reflect on his words, and slowly the truth sinks in - they have been wrong all along. They return all the cats, including Sabel, who purrs gratefully at her rescue. From that day forward, the people of Cebu let go of their old superstition, learning that black cats are not unlucky at all - and this new understanding changes the city for the better.
