Here's the difference between a ghost, a spirit, and a poltergeist. Ghosts are departed souls who've come back to the land of the living because of unfinished business. Their goal can be good, bad, neither, or both. Spirits are the manifestation of the soul in an out of body "adventure". Spirits don't have to be dead unlike the others. Poltergeists are ghosts with a particularly bad goal (eg: revenge). They typically deal with the living but it is not uncommon for it to deal with a place.
