i feel like this year’s met gala theme is super…. yikes? like worse than usual? it’s named after a period in history when innovation was booming because of basically no labour laws and the working class suffering to line the pockets of rich men. like we can glamorize the aesthetic of the gilded age all we want but that doesn’t minimize the fact that it’s an era defined by exploitation. idk something about a bunch of rich people dressing up in that /aesthetic/ feels incredibly tone deaf when we are still living in a world where poverty and worker exploitation still prevail? it feels even worse than last year’s complete virtue signalling, and i think it sucks that we’re being fed this idealized narrative of (especially american) history because oooh sparkly dresses

which is obviously not to say that you can’t enjoy looking at the outfits and rightfully mocking the people who barely put in an effort! just be conscious of the fact that everyone there is (whether inadvertently or not) perpetuating a harmful, idealized, rose-coloured version of history that sends an explicit message of what they consider to be important in the modern world.

@achiilles no I completely agree with this so much, look I have no issue with celeb splurging on outfits and events, obviously it's not ideal but u know its their money I could care less. What I have an issue with, is like u said, that they're celebrating an era which for people of their status was obviously glam and luxurious and iconic but for the working people it was the opposite. They could have chosen any other theme, one with a more positive image for everyone and not just rich white people. Like it just astounds me that no one considered this, its not a private event I mean its on show for the whole world. Buy yeah I love that riz Ahmed at least had some sense but it's not enough

maybe i’m not explaining it very well but here’s an article from the new york post about it: https://nypost.com/2022/05/02/met-galas-gilded-theme-slammed-as-tone-deaf-amid-economic-struggles/amp/

also i get that for a lot of us events like these serve as escapism to a world we can’t even imagine being a part of. i feel the same way, and i think some designers are incredibly creative with the met gala looks they make, and i don’t want to diminish that. but this year just feels so so out of touch to me?

that being said, i do applaud people like riz ahmed for their effort (?) to at least acknowledge the problems with the theme in a way that doesn’t scream aoc’s performative activism? but it’s just not enough to balance out cardi b’s solid gold dress or lizzo’s flute which could pay for my college tuition. just….. yikes!
