"Desiree, your mother would like to talk to you."
I begin to panic and feel a slight sweat starting to form. "No, Dad. I really need to get going. I have a shoot at three and you know how work is."
"Oh, Desiree. We all know you have plenty of time on your hands." The stabbing voice of Elaine Lockridge sends me the shivers. "I want you to come visit us. We're lonely in California."
"Mother," I snort. "We all know you won't come in contact with anyone that makes less than two million a year. Besides, you have Cars and Eric to boss around."
Mother sighs on the other end of the phone. "Oh, Desiree." It's always 'Oh, Desiree.' and a long sigh. "You know that's not true. Carson is at the beach house with Veronica. And Erickson is camping with his friends."
"Cars broke up with Amy? What was that? Two, maybe three weeks and he's got a new girl."
"Desiree Lockridge!" My spine snaps straight. Four years and I still react to her voice, even over the telephone. "That is not the point. It is also none of your concern whom your older brother dates. Now, your father and I would like you to fly down on the twentieth for Thanksg-"
"Mother!" I screech. "Today is the fifteenth! That's in five days! Less than a week! I have a job. Plus, since when have you wanted to see me. Sure as hell not four years ago when you," I take a deep breath and then scream, "disowned me!"
"Desiree!" And I thought I could shout. This woman can be louder than a hundred blow horns. "You have no say in this. You will fly down on the twentieth. You will see your family and behave for four days. You will bring down your fiancé. And you will be polite and cheerful."
Oh my gosh. This is why I moved out when I turned eighteen. Twenty-two and you would think I could stick up for myself. Wait. She still thinks I'm engaged? Ian and I broke it off two years ago. I guess I haven't talked to them since, huh. I sigh and rub my temples. "Mother, I have work, a life. You can't control me anymore." I look at the silver watch on my slim wrist. Three minutes of pure torture. "I need to go now." I lie.
"Desiree, I'm dying. You know this." Oh yes, Mother has terminal cancer. All that money and still no cure. The doctor says she could be gone at any time. Months, years. "I want you to just come down for five days. Five days. I want to see you. My baby daughter. You never know; it may be the la-"
She always pulls the 'I'm dying, now obey me'. I fall for it every time. Hence why I moved away for college. "Fine." Oh crap. My mouth is saying words that my brain is denying. "But as long as we're talking, you should know that Ian and I broke it off."
"What?" Mother takes a sharp intake of breath." Desiree, we told you if you did not marry in a year that we would have you marry Fred. How come you did not inform us?" This is why. Besides, Fred is definitely not my type.
"Mother, Fred is a snot."
"He's charming and comes from a very well-off family."
"Oh come on! He carries a gold embroider handkerchief around. Besides, I'm already dating someone." I spit out. Lies, lies.
I hear her gasp. "Adam, are you hearing all of this? Desiree, how come you haven't told us this?" I believe we've already been over why. "You know the family wealth will not be passed on until you marry." Oh yes. This is all because of money. Why I must be married instead of my older and younger brother is still unknown to me. Although they have already inherited their share of the money because they work for the company. It's just another way for Mother to have control over me. "We had faith in you."
