It all started in 1984 in a city from the Washington state - Seattle. It began when four friends from the Northwest school decided to form a rock band later known as Green River. The band experimented with different genres, such as punk and metal. The band was not commercially successful, but they are told to be the first grunge band.

The same year, the same state, in Montesano three friends from the Montesano High School, formed a band playing covers of their favorite artists, like Jimi Hendrix and The Who. They named themselves Melvins, who are known as pioneers of Sludge Metal and Grunge as well.
