Poem 1: When She Wakes Up

When she wakes up, she feels pain.
She feels cold, clammy, confused;
The air around her is musty,
and pieces of rubble clutter the floor.

When she wakes up, she feels hurt.
Not just in her head,
but also in her heart.
Something happened...
but she can't remember what.

And when she wakes up, she feels panic.
She can't recall anything.
Her name,
her home,
her purpose in life.
Even when she tries to grasp for something, it dissolves.

They look around,
look each other in the eye,
look at the broken down subway in the distance,
look at the bright pink ink stains splattered across the platform,
look at the tattered ceiling—which appears to be a deep, dark hole that could go on forever...

and she wants to go back to sleep.
