Every early autumn, Europe's oldest and wealthiest families send their sons to the Dutch countryside to study at the most prestigious Willem E. Tuinstra's Academy for Young Men. Here-through the required studies of philosophy, literature, etiquette, and arithmetic-even the most rowdy of boys are accepted. There, boys are groomed to the ideal of wit, charm, and class. There, in their isolation, boys become proper gentlemen.

Nathaniel Halworthe is a sixth-year scholarship student at the highly coveted Tuinstra Academy to achieve his dream of becoming a composer. Even with the rakish reputation of his best friend, Amos, Nate is a prefect now and has to get serious. But this year isn't going as he planned. His spot at the school has been threatened and now his family is begging him to return home. It does't help that the music piece of his career is failing miserably and he's developing a growing infatuation with the Head Boy. Nate feels the oncoming pressure and he knows if he isn't careful, he'll crack.

Amos Bradshaw is blazing through his sixth year. Wealthy, beautiful, and popular amongst his peers, Amos is convinced no one can stop him. Especially not with his ragtag roommates by his side. But Amos' home life, something he's been desperate to distance himself from, is beginning to bleed into his days at Tuinstra. It's getting harder and harder to ignore and one day Amos might have to do the unthinkable. Confront it.

Horatio Agosti is good at compromises. Outcasted by his race and father's reputation, Horatio has had to compromise since birth. And so he focuses on three things: friends, God, and his football club. When his club proves they aren't ready for the impending season, he deals with it. And when he feels the first notes of jealously for Amos-the bastard-and his new beau, he ignores it. Horatio always makes compromises. Except when he suspects that someone on the football is planning his downfall.

This is Willem  E. Tuinstra Academy, 1904.
