CHAPTER 1
Sally tossed and turned in her bed, eager for the church service to end and the choir's joyful hymns to cease. It was her first day at a new school, and she wasn't exactly thrilled about it. She would have preferred something dark and gloomy to match her mood. As the bell struck seven, the singing stopped abruptly. Sally carefully got out of bed, sat on the edge, and thought about how to start her day. Her disturbing dreams from the previous night had only added to her anxiety.
As she stood up, she accidentally stepped on a piece of broken glass, which made her curse silently. She saw it as a sign of bad luck, which she didn't need more of. She was already worried about the bullies and jerks she might encounter at school.
After getting ready in the bathroom, she stepped out revealing her physique. She stood at an average height, her figure neither too curvy nor too slender, but perfectly proportioned. Her dark brown hair cascaded down her back in soft waves, with a fringe of bangs framing her round, oval-shaped face and drawing attention to her striking eyes. One eye was a deep indigo, a rich, vibrant color, while the other eye was a piercing black, creating a unique and captivating contrast. She wore the girls' school uniform, a crisp white blouse with a tie and a dark blue pleated skirt that fell just above her knees and she had her pink bag was slung over her shoulder.
As she left the church, the priest leading the mass wished her, "The peace of the Lord be with you." Normally, she would respond with an "Amen," but her anxiety and foul mood prevented her from doing so. A kind worshipper had offered to drive her to school on her first day, which she appreciated, but her mind was still racing with worries. What if the other kids had personal drivers or their own cars? Would she look "shabby" arriving in a taxi? These thoughts consumed her until she arrived at North Valley School.
As Sally stepped out of the taxi, she was taken aback by the sight before her. The students were walking to school, a sea of backpacks and chatter filling the morning air. No cars in sight, just a few show-offs scattered here and there. But what struck her was that more than half the school was on foot, and they looked like the popular kids, the ones who ruled the halls with confidence and charm. She felt a glimmer of hope, a sense that maybe, just maybe, she'd find her place here.
She knew her classroom from the day before, so she made her way there with ease. Taking a deep breath, she pushed open the door and introduced herself with a loud, cheerful voice, "Hi, I'm a transfer student here. My name is Sally Hall!"
The students turned to her, their faces a mix of curiosity and amusement, and Sally's heart skipped a beat. She'd always been nervous about making friends, but something about this moment felt different.
As she sat down at an empty desk, she noticed the homeroom teacher, a kind-faced woman with a warm smile, standing at the front of the room.
"How are you doing today?" she asked, her voice gentle, but the students just stared back, silent and unresponsive. Sally wondered if they were playing some kind of joke on her, or if they genuinely didn't understand what was going on.
Just as she was starting to feel awkward, a student, Frankie, jumped up from his seat, "Ma'am, there's a transfer student!" he exclaimed, his voice full of enthusiasm.
The teacher's eyes landed on Sally, and she smiled, "Ah, yes, welcome, Sally. And your name?"
Sally stood up, feeling a bit more at ease, "Sally Hall."
The teacher nodded, "Have you submitted your files to the Admissions office?"
Sally replied, "Yes, ma'am."
The teacher nodded again, "Okay, feel free around them. They're all nice." With that, she turned and walked out of the room, leaving Sally feeling a bit bewildered.
