This is for the_Lena_girl's contest. It's kinda long, and a lil' bit dark, but I hope you enjoy it ^^

Question: Does it matter what side you're on, or is love just love?

Shane's POV:

I walked to my chambers, frustrated. I can't believe we are doing nothing while our Kingdom is getting destroyed. I hate it. Why can't we do anything? We have the power to annihilate them. So why the hell aren't we? I don't understand. It's ridiculous. Utterly ridiculous. He should have to suffer.

I plopped down on my bed and sighed, staring up at the ceiling. Not that I expected much. Our Kingdom is known for running away. I guess that's why we have such a massive target on our back. Because they know they can cause devastation, and we would still thank them for giving us a good time or teaching us a lesson or something.

"Oi, pretty boy." I looked at the doorway to see my brother, Adrian, standing there, a bored expression on his face. Is he even capable of looking anything but that? It's actually kinda disturbing. "Father has ordered for you to stop worrying about stuff that doesn't concern you and get some rest, otherwise he's gonna come and beat your ass."

"I doubt he said the last part," I replied, rolling my eyes as he came and sat next to me, resting his head on my chest.

"You beat your golden locks he did. I am repeating exactly what he said to a T," Adrian told me, and I snorted in response.

"Likely story, now let me get changed," I said, pushing him off of me. I stood up and started getting changed, and Adrian decided to bring up the most random of subjects. And honestly, they made me question everything. But I was happy, and I couldn't ask for anything else. I looked at Adrian and smiled.

He cocked an eyebrow up at me as if he was suspicious of me for whatever reason. "What are you so happy about?"

"I don't know. I guess I'm just in a good mood." I replied, and he narrowed his eyes at me. His dark brown eyes seemed to stare into my soul, and I shuddered.

"You know how suspicious you sound, right?" He asked, and I rolled my eyes, throwing my shirt at him.

"Way to ruin the mood, jackass," I muttered before letting out a small laugh.

"Dude, you're scaring me," Adrian said, inching away from me.

"Don't be so dramatic. That's my job." I replied, and he scowled at me, throwing my shirt back at me. Still no smile, but he was enjoying himself, and that was good enough for now. But, unfortunately, that happiness didn't last long, and I have never wished so hard for something like that to come back.

They knew about this inevitable outcome, and they didn't tell me. I was spared, but I wish I never was. I wasn't worth sparing. I don't want to live this life of pretend. I want that happiness back...

Fire.

It was midnight, and there was fire everywhere. In the castle, and as I looked out a window, I saw that it had spread across the entire Kingdom. Everyone had been slaughtered or burned alive. No one survived. No one... but me? Why was I spared? I don't understand. I pushed the thought to the back of my mind and picked up a gun and a sword as I exited the castle.

I ran through my Kingdom, hoping to find someone who had survived. But no. There was nothing. Only the scars that these flames were so willing to give me. And I couldn't understand why I, of all people, had lived, and I hated it. I didn't deserve this. Nobody did...
