Wither

~

The silence was anything but serene.

Opening my mouth to speak is useless. No sound comes out.

I want answers so desperately. I just want a chance to remember.

A huge waterfall sat by my left. The sound of water sloshing and plitter-plattering was all I could hear. No life resided inside of the large body of water. I float to the large pool of water and gaze into it. I had no reflection.

The moon reflects off of the water perfectly, granting me enough light to see my surroundings.

Then, something impossible happened.

I heard something. Scratch that— someone.

I didn't believe it at first. The voice was no louder than a whisper, but gradually it grew louder. It grew closer by the second.

"H-Hello?" It called out, "Is anyone here?"

Yes! My mind replies, Yes, I'm here! I've been here for so long! Yes, there's someone here!

Yet, no matter how hard I tried, no sound came out.

"Hello?"

I open my mouth desperately, but no sound came out. I try again. And again. Six more times.

"What a shame... I guess I'm alone now..."

My body moves on its own. I float towards the voice.

I can't miss this chance. The chance to be able to have company. The chance to see an actual being.

"W-What the-?!"

My head turns around, my eyes locking with a skeleton. Its eyes were wide. It was shaking.

My feet touch the ground gingerly. I gaze into its eyes and slowly approach it.

It scurries backwards as fast as it could, beads of sweat forming on its skull. I don't understand this and walk closer until our foreheads nearly touched.

"P-Please," it whispers, "D-Don't hurt me..."

Hurt it? I was taken aback. Why did it believe my intentions were to hurt it?

I open my mouth to speak, but, once again, no sound comes out.

Its back hits into a tree behind it. It freezes momentarily.

I don't understand... Why... Why is it fearful of me? I don't mean any harm...

Its eyes flutter shut, its eyes shut tight. It was visibly trembling more harshly than moments before.

My hands find their way into theirs. I gently wrap both of my hands around theirs.

Its eyes open slowly, cautiously.

"W-What...?"

I gaze at it curiously. Is this what life looks like?

It finally stops trembling and looks up at me. "You... You aren't going to hurt me, are you?"

I shake my head firmly. It sighs and stands up.

"S-Sorry about that... It's not every day you find a transparent w-wither skeleton whilst hunting for food..."

Wither skeleton? Is that what I am?

I nod, even though I did not fully understand.

"What's... What's your name...?" It asks.

My name? I wish I remembered...

I stay silent, though it wasn't like I had a choice.

"...W-Well, anyway, I'm Radius (yes it's a type of bone shush-). I've been stuck in these woods for days... Any clue where the nearest town could be...? I'm lost..." I frown and shake my head. It sighs.

"I'm happy there's at least someone here. The silence in these woods are super creepy. There aren't even crickets chirping at midnight."

He wasn't wrong. The only source of sound I'd usually get was either from the waterfall or an occasional breeze. Other than that, it was pure silence.

I nod in agreement.

"Well, uhh... Do you live around here? Are there any other wither skeletons around? Or any mobs for that matter?" I shake my head.

"Well this is great... Just great! The first time I'm given permission to hunt and I get lost... I'm never going to hear the end of it..."

He sighs. "Well, I'd best get going then..."

My eyes widen. No! Don't leave! You're the only living being I've ever conversed with! Scratch that— you're the only different sound I've heard, ever! Please, please, please don't go! I can't stand the deafening sound of nothingness!

I float next to him and place my feet onto the ground. He pauses and says, "You wanna come with?"

I nod frantically, grabbing onto his arm firmly.

He chuckles lightheartedly. "That'd be great! Honestly, being alone in these woods is pretty scary... Having a friend by my side would definitely ease the deafening silence around here."

For the first time since I've woken up, I smiled. Finally, finally, there was someone that could understand me.
