✩Sophie's POV✩

Sophie Foster didn't know just what would happen when she went by herself to the beach at sunset for an evening swim.

She always loved the beach. The calming waves, the squawking seagulls, the palm trees swaying together in the breeze, it was all so beautiful to her. Around her seaside town, she heard there were incidents of crazed lunatics reporting seeing vicious mermaids in the rolling waves. But Sophie had been there countless times before and never spotted a sign of anything other than humans and dolphins in the sea ahead, so she took the warnings her neighbors gave her with a grain of salt.

Sophie flung her sandals away and sunk her toes into the warm, soft sand. The rough patches tickled her feet while the soft ones soothed them, making her let out a sigh of relief at the touch of the sand.

A wide grin grew on her face as she galloped toward the waves, passing the lines on the beach where the sand turned wet and muddy and the bottoms of her feet were dipped in the brownish wet mud. She kept running, feeling her toes touch the cold waters of the ocean and wading deeper until she was dashing into the ocean with the line where water met air at her waist. She took a deep breath, diving into the crashing waves headfirst.

Sophie's eyes stung at the sensation of the salty water against her eyes, but she didn't care. The water was a murky brown color, darkest below her feet and lightest above it, with the dipping sunset illuminating the earthy waters, gifting it a golden glow. Sophie's long blonde hair clung to her cheeks as it quickly became drenched, and her clothes which she forgot to take off were soaked with ocean water now.

The girl swam further into the complex sea until it was long past when her feet could reach the bottom, and the sandy shore was far behind her. The ocean had now concealed half of the glowing golden sun, making a semi circle of light ahead of Sophie. To say the least, it was beautiful.

Sophie's chest tightened as her leg brushed up against something thin and prickly. She tried to move her leg away, but she couldn't. Two thin strands of the mysterious object trapped her foot where it was. She tried to wriggle away again, only allowing more strands to curl against her toes. She kicked the thing with the left foot, only causing that one to be caught, too. She looked down to see a horrifyingly huge net of fishing wire trapping her feet underwater, restraining them from kicking to shore. She was trapped.

Sophie started to scream. For anything, for anyone to save her from drowning. But she was in the middle of the ocean, with nobody around for miles and miles, she assumed. She had no idea how far she'd gone out to sea. It was kind of hard to focus on things like that, when she was about to die. She could barely focus on keeping her head above the surface of the water when the claustrophobic feeling of the rope imprisoning her toes clamped around her feet, like the strands were tightening and closing in on her. Sophie ended up sucking deep mouthfuls of ocean water into her mouth in a panic, but her heart was pounding too much for her to notice. She was going to die.

"I'm coming!" a soft, but powerful voice said from behind her. Sophie whipped around with relief as a figure splashed into the figure to save her. Sophie's heart soared with triumph as she felt a sharp knife snap the thin rope around her toes, freeing them from the net's iron grip.

A head popped out of the water to meet Sophie's eyes. Sophie sucked in a breath as she gazed upon the girl. She had striking teal eyes that swirled with spirals of deep blue, light blue, seafoam green, turquoise, and every shade of color that reminded you of the ocean. Her skin was a soft light brown color and appeared smoother than butter against her eyes. Her long dark brown hair didn't cling to her face like Sophie's did, in fact, her hair looked completely wavy and dry and silkier than buttermilk. And her lips were the most perfect shade of raspberry pink, and they looked glossier than anyone Sophie had ever seen.

A glittering strand of pearls hugged the top of her forehead, circling around her head like a crown, and her cheeks were dappled with droplets of salty water that were spread around like freckles.

The girl was breathtakingly beautiful, to make an understatement. Sophie couldn't seem to breathe out for moments after seeing her, eventually gasping out a breath of air and quickly breathing back in for another, not breaking eye contact with the ethereal being.

"Are you okay?" the girl asked Sophie softly, in the most beautiful voice full of a thousand different melodies.

"Yeah, I'm okay," Sophie said, her heart racing rapidly as the girl gripped Sophie's hands with her smooth ones. Sophie looked down at their intertwined fingers with an overwhelming mix of emotions that was already out of control before she gazed past their locked fingers and beyond. Sophie peered into the water, noticing a beautiful bright blue glitter in the water. She dived in while still holding the girl's hand.

Sophie choked on the salty water of the ocean when she spotted it. The curve of it, the blue and purple sparkle in the water.

The tail.

And that's when she fainted.
