I live here, under the flowers. My brethren laugh when they pass by. Slithering passed, with their slitted tongues and skin of scales. 

"Foolish," they say. 

"Pathetic," they hiss. 

They do not know. 

They do not know that the lizards and the mice and the crawling things of the earth love the flowers. 

I wait in the shadows, in the twisted twigs and damp grass. 

Waiting, waiting, waiting. 

There. 

There it is, the matted fur and black eyes.

I snap, my unforgiving jaw closing around the small animal. 

It withers, screams.

I am no fool.

I am the serpent under the flowers.
