"...all ended with her
eyes, Hell, Purgatory,
Paradise."
— Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Dante at Verona
from Collected Poetry and Prose.EXT. MURDOCK UNITED KINGDOM - NIGHT.
A young NOVA CARMINE quietly pads down the stairs, making sure to avoid the creaks as she makes her way into the kitchen for a glass of water. Smelling burning, she peeks through the cracked door of the living room at her father, FRANKLYN CARMINE, as he stands over a charred body, knuckles caked with blood, muttering under his breath as he paces, pure anger and a fire in his eyes. He reaches for something on the table in front of the couch, a bottle. He takes a healthy swig and places it down, hands curling into his hair as his eyes wonder to the broken shards of glass framing her body like a halo — somehow, she's almost angelic, even in death. For a moment, he falters. But the fire consumes him and with renewed purpose, he crosses the threshold to the small corridor as he makes his way out the door, car keys in hand. He doesn't even see his daughter staring at his retreating back as he slams the door shut behind him, the sound echoing off the walls.
