It was not the first time Sky came to the sports hall at the end of the community building. Sky had come here before as a junior medical officer to help with his senior in orthopaedic department. He was already well versed with the directions inside the building when he got the news that he's going to be the attending physician for the promising young athletes.
His senior sports physician told him he would oversee the athletes today in the community building. They were a bunch of seniors in university who will take part in national competitions in various sports. As the most junior trainee, he was given the simplest task aka the most troublesome ones.
It was open secret that the young athletes from the community building have a lot of potentials, but they usually came with a lot of baggage. It was not like the youngsters from the urban area where they were usually more polished and had their own sports physician at the comfort of their own home.
Today, it was Sky's first day as a sports physician trainee.
And he's determined to make this place his own comfort zone.
Sky walked into the doctor's room which was located at the end of the sports hall. He could hear the loud noises from the athletes, the cheers from the ladies and Sky let out a sigh. He was nervous because of course, on the very first day here his senior suddenly called and told him he had to man the doctor's office alone because he had an emergency.
Of course, dating is an emergency.
P-Ray should make up to him after this.
He sighed because it's his first day and P-Ray was supposed to give him some orientation to how the office doctor's work so that he could familiarise a bit with the surroundings. Every office had different medications registry and different methods of referral or supervisor. It was supposed to be introduced by the first responder of the office which was P-Ray who apparently absent today to tend to his lover.
There was a large mirror at the corridor before coming to the office. He took a look at himself, wearing light pink scrubs with light blue Nike sneakers. He had just dyed his hair a bit lighter yesterday because he felt like it.
Why did I decide on this pink scrubs?
Regrets started to creep in, Sky breathed loudly. He should have just worn regular shirt and tie and called it a day.
But this pink scrub is my lucky charm, another voice chimed in his head.
He smiled, it should be enough for a reassurance.
He pushed open the door and walked in.
"Hi," he greeted a fellow young male nurse who was sitting on the chair playing games on his phone. He looked up and smiled at Sky. Sky returned the smile and watched around the office that had two wide windows for nice ventilation and sunlight. "My name is Doctor Sky," he introduced himself and the male nurse held out his hand.
"My name is Rain," he stood up and Sky was surprised by his charm. "I'm in charge today,"
"There's supposed two of us, me and Dr Ray,"
"Yes, he called me and said he couldn't make it." Rain said with a friendly grin on his face.
"Are there any patients today?"
"So far, there's none." Rain shrugged and showed the patient's registry on the table. "You can refer to the list here, the coaches always put the names on the list. The most that you will see in a day is around 5 patients,"
"Five?" it was a whole lot lesser than what he'd consulted in hospital. Rain's smile widened.
"Five of severe cases, doctor. The doctors assigned here usually went to the sports hall or the dining hall to see what the athletes are up to. They usually treat the patients on the spot, the doctors are used to being on the field rather than being up here in the office."
Ah, the curse of the pink scrub! Sky scolded himself. He should've worn a darker colour, it would be easier to clean.
"But don't worry, doctor. Different doctors, different style. Lady doctors usually kept themselves in the office because they wanted to avoid harassment,"
"There's harassment in here?" Rain shrugged. "Didn't they go reported?"
"No one can testify for the harassment, so the lady doctors just stayed here for the treatment. I'm not sure too whatever happened to the allegations, I heard the coaches disallow the suspects to practice here anymore."
"That's good to hear, but it was such a pity to the lady doctors."
"Yes, that's why we resorted to ask for male trainees if possible to avoid stuffs like that happened again,"
"What kind of harassment?"
"I'm sorry, sir. I don't know," Sky sat down on his chair. Rain didn't seem to want to talk more about the issue so he dropped it.
"Alright then. So, I guess I'll make a short trip to the hall,"
It was fortunate that Sky wore his sneakers. He brought along his stethoscope in the pocket and phone before he followed Rain to the halls.
The sports complex comprised of three main buildings. The aquatic centre, the indoor and outdoor centre with 3 common halls in between the three buildings. The three common halls had their own dining hall with it.
Sky wheezed when he entered the indoor centre which was at the end of the building - the most distant from the doctor's office. He wasn't someone who liked strenuous exercise even though he was trained for it since he was very young. Rain who was a very cheerful person didn't seem to be affected by the distance they were walking, and his footsteps were fast for someone shorter than him.
"I swear this is the last one," Rain said happily. He liked the fact that Sky looked breathless.
"You said it last time when we were at the football's field,"
"Ah...yes," Rain put a hand on his mouth to hide his smirk. "Sorry, doc. I guess I got carried away," Rain gestured for Sky to enter the first hall, and there were athletes playing volleyball in it. Sky was relieved with the gust of air conditioner when the door was pushed.
"Look out!" Sky turned and saw a ball came from his left side. Without thinking, his elbow hit it and he kicked it with his knees sending the ball flying back to the wall. It was all in a whim but enough to drop Rain's jaw down.
Oh shit, I nearly exposed myself.
Sky fell on the floor.
"Doc, are you okay?" Rain bent down to help, even when Sky was just pretending but the assistant didn't know about it.
"Yeah, I was just in shock,"
"Are you sure?" Rain looked around and saw an athlete approaching them.
"I'm sorry," Sky turned and saw him with a very bright smile. He was muscular, his sinewy body accentuated by the sleeveless jersey he was wearing. Sky noticed the boy was staring at him, his big dark brown eyes focused on the doctor.
"You should be careful!" Rain scolded the athlete.
"Ah," he put both hands together and bowed down to Sky. Sky stood up in silent and bowed down too. "I'm sorry, P-"
"Doctor Sky," Rain corrected him quickly.
"Ah, Doctor Sky, I'm sorry. It was me who kicked the ball a bit too forceful today," he flashed his ivory white teeth. "Are you okay, though?" he wandered to Sky's back side, and somehow Sky felt embarrassed.
"No, stop. I'm okay," Sky put a hand to stop him.
"I'm Prapai," he said nonchalantly, his eyes back to the doctor. He seemed smitten by the sight before him. "I'm a volleyball athlete,"
"I can see that very clearly, thank you," Rain chuckled by their side.
"You should be careful with your practice, or else, we won't get any sports trainee after this,"
"Oh, really?" Prapai lifted his eyebrows. "Nice to meet you, doctor." Sky smiled at him, and again Sky could see the subtle blush on his cheeks. "Can I see you again?"
"In the doctor's office," Sky replied blatantly. He'd seen this type of playful athletes before; they were just friendly with wildest ambition and determination. He'd seen it at the hospital and he'd seen it at the practice. Prapai might be one of them.
