February 14th, 11:17am
An exasperated groan fell from Giraffy's mouth as he sat next to his bed, his head in his hands. He slowly ran his hands through his hair, trying to calm his racing thoughts. He huffed as he pulled himself up and began to practise again.
"Hey Mimi, this is for y-"
"Mimi, I wrote this-"
"Stop fucking up, you idiot. Just breathe."
He growled in anger, falling back onto his bed. His continuous failures incredibly irritated him. He had spent the whole night creating a beautiful, heartfelt letter for Mimi, handwritten and everything. He didn't have the confidence or memory to recite it to her, of course, but decided to just hand her the letter and hope it would come across just as sincere. But no matter what he said or did, he had to do it flawlessly. Given their circumstances, nobody knew if they were still going to be alive to see their next Valentine's Day. He couldn't mess up his chance.
Giraffy walked down the stairs of the Safe Place, passing Zizzy and Player as he did until he reached the 4th floor. The 4th floor had a laundry room, a small gym, and both Pony and Mimi's rooms. There was always someone on the floor, busy with their daily tasks. He thought for sure Mimi had to be somewhere there. Where else would she be?
Giraffy walked down the hallway with the two bedrooms. He shook as he reached Mimi's door. As he reached his arm out to knock, a gust of air pushed against him. He turned around and retracted his arm quickly to see Pony standing in his doorway, smiling.
"Giraffy! Hey!" Pony said, stepping out of the doorway and closing the door behind him. "Do you need something?"
"Uhm," Giraffy stuttered, "Yeah, I was looking for Mimi."
"Mimi? She didn't come up after breakfast, she might still be in the kitchen."
"Oh, alright. Thanks."
"No problem." The two gave each other a grin as they went their separate ways.
Giraffy continued walking downstairs until he got to the kitchen. He could hear the giggles of the kids, followed by a loud thud and high-pitched gasps. He crept down the stairs and sat down in a spot where he could see the inside of the kitchen while also being completely hidden. He could see Mimi scolding Zuzy, who was covered in what seemed to be sequins, standing next to a pile of spilled glitter. Zee sat there, calmly drawing with her crayons, paying no mind to what was happening. Giraffy stood up and approached the situation. He leaned on the doorway and continued watching.
Mimi searched through the kitchen cupboards until she found a dustpan and broom and began cleaning Zuzy's mess. Zuzy ran past Giraffy and up the stairs. In the distance, a quiet yet loud feud could be heard from two floors above. Mimi noticed Giraffy out of the corner of her eye and greeted him.
"Oh, hi Giraffy," she paused, "how long have you been there?"
"Not long," he joked, then gestured towards the catastrophe, "do you need some help?"
"I should be fine, thank you." she sighed. The room was in silence for a few seconds before Giraffy broke it.
"Hey, there's something I've been wanting to show you.." Giraffy said, reaching into his pockets.
"I'm sorry, Giraffy, but could you maybe tell me later? I'm a bit busy." She said with slight annoyance in her voice. Giraffy nodded sadly and left the room.
12:08 pm
Giraffy retreated outside to his garden. He used it as his calm and quiet escape for when the Safe Place got too chaotic, which happened quite a bit with 3 kids running around. Luckily, all the time Giraffy spent in his garden proved useful once he mastered the skill of growing foods for everyone.
Along with his food, Giraffy had grown and taken care of a beautiful array of flowers. Yet, amongst all his gorgeous flowers sprouted tiny daisies. At first, he chose to ignore them but once he started noticing how much space they took up, he began plucking them out. But no matter how many he pulled out, more grew back. He noticed 3 daisies towered over by a small pot plant and tugged at them, taking his annoyance out bit by bit. He considered the idea of ripping each petal off as well but held back the urge and shoved them into his pocket.
Giraffy sat down, leaning against the wall, his head just below a window. He tilted his head up at the sky, his eyes closed. He listened to the sounds of the birds and the warm breeze whistling. He was in a complete sense of relaxation and almost asleep before he heard a loud click and a soft grunt. He swivelled around to see Mimi leaning against the window frame, her arms crossed and head tilted as she stared down at him. A red-hot blush immediately covered his face.
"I thought I would find you here." She chuckled, tucking a wisp of hair out of her view. Remnants of the glitter accident were still all over her, stuck to the frayed sleeves of her jumper. Giraffy quickly pulled himself up to his feet, laughing with her. He faced her, keeping his hands stiff by his side. "So, what was that thing you wanted to show me?" Mimi said, looking him up and down in a childishly curious way that stole his breath.
Giraffy dug his hands into his pockets and frantically searched for the note. Shit. He thought. He kept digging, but he couldn't find it. This is not happening. Shit, shit, shit. He looked up at Mimi, who was peering at his garden. The way the sun hit her face made him melt inside. He continued to hectically search through his pockets until he realised the only things he had were the 3 daisies. He wondered for a moment, debating with himself whether to either give Mimi the flowers or tell her there was nothing to show.
Giraffy anxiously held out the 'bouquet' to Mimi, his head bowed down and eyes shut tight. He loosened his grip on the flowers as he felt a slight tug. He opened his eyes to see her, flowers in hand, scanning over them. She smiled brightly as she ran her fingers over each petal. She seemed touched as if it was the first time someone showed genuine appreciation for her.
"These are...beautiful," She let out a soft giggle, "Thank you Giraffy."
"It's nothing. really. Just a few stupid daisies."
She singled out one of the daisies and held it up to the sunlight.
"They're not stupid." She tucked the flower on top of her ear. They both giggled together.
She took another and leaned in closer over the window. Giraffy's heart began to race faster than the sweat running down his face. She fidgeted with the second flower as she tried to place it behind his ear, making them both laugh even more."They really are gorgeous." She ran her hand down his face as she perfected the placement, carefully examining him. Their eyes met before they caught sight of each other's lips. Before either of them knew it, their lips were pressed against each other. The whole world froze in time and melted away as they got closer and closer to each other. Giraffy pulled away first, red hot with embarrassment. Mimi grinned at him, just as flustered.
"Mimi- '' He began to say. His eyes met with hers again. They fell into each other's gaze once Their eyes said more than they ever could.
12:24 pm
Mimi stepped away from the window and turned towards the stairs. She treaded her way up to her room and flopped onto her bed. She reached into her pocket, pulling out a folded paper note labelled with her name next to a pink heart. She unfolded it and reread the contents over and over until she memorised each line by heart, grinning wider with each word. She held it to her chest and directed her head at the ceiling, silently squealing.
She was just as ditzy as him.
