The Last Wolf Standing

Chapter 1: enthronement

(This story is written in a first person perspective)

I just heard news I was to be appointed the new demon king. I had mixed emotions on this turn of events. On the one hand,  it's the highest position in all of demon society, on the other hand,  the current country is in a huge bind, and I'm not sure if I will be able to turn around this bloody war which seems to get more and more desperate every day. You see, my current situation is the result of a single invasion that started 50 years ago.

To summarize recent history, there are 6 major nations in this world, The Human Kingdom Newdom, The United Angelic Kingdom, The Elven Nation, Forest Tree State, the confederation of dwarfs, the neutral nation called Slavia State, and the demon kingdom of Clesto.

These nations existed in a tense, but stable peace, there was even trade relations between a few nations. But when a new king took over Newdom everything changed. The Newdom King preached a gospel that supports the elimination of all demons, so when he took power he aligned with the United Angelic Kingdom (which has always had a hatred of demons) ;and launched an invasion in order to eliminate the entire demon race.

There attacks were swift,  quickly taking over most of the border city's in a matter of weeks.
(The circles are the country's capitals and corresponding map colors. The color encroaching into another nations territory represents that the territory is being occupied)

The invasions were effective and deadly. The humans and angels killed every single human they saw; woman,children,men, none were spared from the massacre. The surrounding nations had various reactions. The elven nation disagreed with the invasion but did nothing about it. The Dwarfs remained completely neutral, and Slavia was very against the invasion, and is providing us financial aid but is hesitant about getting directly involved.

Since the initial border land grab , the human angel alliance has slowly taken more and more of our land. Now currently enemy forces are occupying half of our land, and our military and economy is on the verge of collapse. Slavia is increasingly showing interest in joining the war, increasingly worried about their own safety, however are still not fully committed and seem to need one more push before stepping in fully. 

That takes us to now.I'm walking towards the demon castle surrounded by guards in order commence my swearing in ceremony and official become the new demon king. I've been in that castle thousands of times but it still is jarring to see every time. It's over 8 story's tall and as long as a football field, however part of the right wing of the building is clearly falling apart and the cracking paint everywhere shows it hasn't been maintained or renovated in years. The former demon king cut out funding for castle maintenance as an effort to cut down spending as much as possible. As I walk into the castle, I'm greeted by the former presidents head advisor, a towering 6'10 orc, with 2 huge fangs coming out from each side of his mouth, and a monocle hanging from his right eye.  While he is putting on a smile it is obvious that he is still clearly distraught over the former kings death. We exchange greetings as he leads my up the stairs, I learn his name is mike and he started working at the castle the same year the previous demon king was appointed. I felt bad by how sorrowful he felt talking about his recently passed boss, knowing that he must have been well liked. While he guides me closer to the ceremony room,  I notice 6 very strong auras inside, and instinctively prepare my defenses. There not as strong as me but are much more powerful then the average soldier. Mike opens the door and I finally see where those 6 auras are coming from
