"Listen. If you're outside, get in a mall or somewhere indoor, safe. Don't come over."
"But you gotta tell me what's happeni-"
"I'll text you. Gotta go. Bye."
What is happening?
Jay opens the room door and rushes in front of me.
"Kya! See this." He turns on the TV.
"Breaking news! Gangs of kidnappers are appearing everywhere in Chicago in every neighbourhood, threatening people to hand over phones, credit cards, etc. This raid is putting thousands of lives at risk. Police are already heading towards the crime scenes but they are also in danger, the kidnappers are chasing them as well. The kidnappers keep dialing the victims' families, threatening for ransom. A real-life money or life scene. The kidnappers? We now call them "The Thunderbolts". A-"
I turn off the TV.
"Kya, we need to-"
"Jay! I have something to say."
I take a deep breath and spit out everything Dad said on our phone call just now.
"What the hell..."
"I know."
"Okay, let me say what I'm about to say now." I'm all ears.
"Okay, so basically, I heard that the Thunderbozos are heading our way now. Our neighbourhood will be their biggest target, since you know, we're like the richest neighbourhood in Chicago. So I think we gotta go."
"But my dad said we should probably stay here."
"We can't. We have to go."
"Where are we going to?"
He pauses and thinks.
"Do you not know where to go?"
"I'm thinking, Kya."
Then suddenly we hear police car and gunshot noises nearby. Jay's dad, Keith rushes in.
"Guys, we have to go. We're going to Ohio. Jay's family is there, so don't worry."
I panic. "Wait, how about my family..."
"Where's your family? Maybe we could pick them up."
"I don't know..Dad said he'll text me. Wait, I got a message!"
I check my phone and see Dad's message.
"Kya, don't come find for us. Go. Since Kaitlyn is at Jeff's, he took her to Indiana because her grannies are there, and it's safer. For me and Mom, we honestly don't know what to do. We're at Michigan Avenue."
Oh no. Michigan Avenue. The place with the most people.
"Guys, they're at Michigan Avenue... Kaitlyn already took off"
Keith gulped."Kya, I'm sorry but we can't get them..."
"Please, we have to. I can't leave my parents in danger."
"Well I guess we could set up a scene.."
"Yes please."
The three of us start planning. We are thinking about Keith making a distraction, then the attention will be drawn to it, then Jay and I can get my parents. But it can't be that easy. Me and Keith both think that there will be a lot of the kidnappers there, and we won't be able to get past them. Then Jay says, "Worth a shot. Let's go."
We hop into Keith's old Benz car, and we take off.
It's my first time doing something like this, and I like it.
