✩Keefe's POV✩

Black sand slowly pours out of my hands the second I picked handfuls of it up, a steady rhythm of dark, sandy waterfalls and the touch of the grains warmed by the setting sun.

I pick up a handful of sand. Put it down. Wait for the quiet yet assured footsteps against the soft ground to come.

My heart nearly leaps out of my chest when I hear the inevitable, but I force myself to be calm and wait for her to say something.

"Hey," Sophie says, emerging from the dusky shadows and standing a few feet away. The sunset lights up her blonde hair and brown eyes with a vibrant assortment of reds, goldens, blues, and violets. My heart weeps a little bit at the fact that all those years before I met her, I had to wake up each morning not knowing the beauty of Sophie Elizabeth Foster. I don't remember if I dragged myself through each day knowing something was missing, but didn't know what, or if I had no idea life could feel this good when around someone like her. I also don't know which option is more depressing.

"Hi," I say. "You came."

"Yeah," she replies shyly. "I wanted to. You know, you're not too bad at planning dates." She sits down next to me, her arm inching up my shoulder and I feel like I could crumble, like a house of cards in a full on rainstorm.

"I try."

"Yes, and you succeed." She grins at me. "That's why I felt I should contribute." She reaches into her jacket pocket and hands me a sleek black box.

I greedily open the box and feel my heart- and stomach- leap with joy. "E.L. Fudges?"

"Surprise. Thought you could use a good old cookie snack."

"We, Foster. We are sharing the cookies."

Sophie rolls her eyes. "Yeah, yeah, sure." She takes a cookie from the box and pops it into her mouth. She paused while chewing and looks down at the tear on her ripped jeans. "You feel that?"

I wait for a moment and feel a small droplet fall onto my skin. "Rain."

"It can rain on beaches?"

Now it's my turn to grin. "It can in the Lost Cities!"

Sophie rolls her eyes again, but her smile is easygoing. "Of course." She pulls her hood over her head and leans on my shoulder. I feel the warmth of her touch spread across my body and I pull her closer, because I never can get enough of her touch, not really, not ever.

I feel grateful that reading the minds of other elves is illegal for telepaths.

Over the next few minutes, the rain begins to pick up until Sophie and I are soaking wet but laughing at the flatness of each other's hair.

"You look terrible."

"Ditto." Sophie's hair is plastered to her face, which makes my gaze drift to her lips, her soft, red lips, and suddenly I can't look away. I hastily tuck her hair behind her ear and kiss her, wrapping my hands around her waist.

We stand up, meet together in the pouring rain, and express a small fraction of the passion and love we feel, and even that is overwhelming, and all the pain seems to be taken away from her kiss because it feels impossible to be sad when her hands are cupping my cheeks so lovingly.

After either only a few seconds or an eternity, it's hard to tell, Sophie pulls away for air, and we both stand there, grasping as much air as we can.

Then she smiles at me, and I see sparks fly.
