The year is 1014 CE, Danelaw is in the middle of its invasion against England and King Sweyn is engaged in a conspiracy against his son Prince Canute who is likewise in a conspiracy to kill his father the king.
Askeladd and his band of mercenaries used to follow no one, but Askeladd sees potential in the young prince and wishes for him to fulfill the role of King of Brittania in stead of himself due to his age, and so Askeladd tirelessly orders his crew to assist Canute in his path to becoming king, who later gains the additional assistance of Thorkell the Giant who previously defected to England.
The story opens up at a feast in Gainsborough, where the events that unfold mark the beginning of Canute's kinghood.
