Noelle Lochheart was once hopeful enough to believe that the Hunger Games could never touch someone like herself. Born in the heart of District 4, she was raised in a community built on love; the Lochheart family were known for feeding the less fortunate, with her father Justice operating a humble fish market for the townspeople. They were no Capitol, but they got by just fine. They were good people.
Then, her name was called, and the wiry sound would ring in her ears forevermore. She would have been a fool to expect any volunteers ─ she was seventeen years old, and a capable one at that. Nobody felt sorry enough for her. Whilst they hardly expected a victory, the population of District 4 knew that someone like Noelle Lochheart would put up a valiant fight, and she'd go down swinging. She'd go down, for certain.
Noelle wasn't delusional. There was no chance in Hell that she could win using her intellect alone, but she would rather have taken the easy way out on day one than have somebody as arrogant as Finnick Odair to teach her the ropes of combat.
Nineteen-year-old Finnick was selfish, brusque, horrifically cocky, and every other insult under the scorching sun that Noelle could spit out. He clearly had zero belief in her winning: this girl was yet another dainty little thing with cloudy dreams and a pretty face. They would eat her alive.
But Finnick had started a fire, bright and burning, so Noelle had every intention to prove him wrong.
