for Ali, you gave me motivation when I had none to spare.

—————————————————————————

I had never been properly noticed. I was a simple lowly Silvan elf of the Mirkwood Guard.

Nothing was special about me, so I never expected to get attention.

It was that way, for many years. Wake up, get dressed, eat, fight some spiders, sleep.

One day, it all changed...

                                                                                   - - -

It was a normal day and I was out riding my mare in the woods when I heard a shrill, high pitched scream.

My pointed ears heard it before it had even reached me. I dashed off in the direction it had come from. I wove my horse through the treacherous low and twisted branches of the Woodland Realm before finally reaching the source of the noise.

It was an elf, a young one, by the looks of it. Maybe only 100-150 years old. There was one of biggest spiders I have ever seen in this world on top of them.

The spider hadn't seen me yet, so I took my chance.

I swiftly pulled an arrow from my quiver and fitted it to my bow. It is always best to hit them in the back, where there web is stored, so I carefully aimed my arrow at its backside.

I loosed the arrow and it shot right into the spiders buttocks.

I silently praised myself for the shot before jumping off my mare and helping the elf underneath.

The poor being was too terrified to speak. She was shaking as she gripped my hand. "Av-'osto. Odulen an edraith angin." I spoke gently.

The elf nodded and quietly whispered "Le f-fael" before me follwing me too my horse.

"I-" she started. I helped her climb onto my mares back. I pushed my horse into a slow walk and nod for her to keep talking.

"I was out collecting h-herbs for m-medicine," the elf stuttered. "The k-king sent me." I noticed that she was still clinging to my waist.

"What's your name?" I asked gently.

"B-briar," she tripped over her words once again.

"I'm Faelwen." I push my horse into canter as I introduced myself.

"Faelwen..."

Briar's voice is so quiet I can barely hear it over the rustle of the leaves.

"Your the one who is close with the prince, right?" she asks tentatively.

"Um, well, we're friends..." I reply, slightly embarrased that she knows about my personal life.

The silence between us grows louder as we reach the gate.

I nod politely to the guards as they murmur "Hiril vuin," I jump off my mare and hand her reins to one of the guards at the gate. I take Briar by the hand and lead her up the winding bridges that lead to the throne.

"Tòro. We are going to see the King."
