The noise of the phone ringing pierced the air in our apartment. I left my half asleep state to go answer the phone. "Hey kiddo, we have to talk" "Uncle Daniel? What is it?"

The only noise i could hear was the beeping of the monitor connected to my mother. I sat in a chair next to my uncle Daniel facing my mother's hospital bed. They told us that she was brain dead, and we would have to unplug her machines. The doctor appeared in the doorway. It was time.

I stared out the plane window at the beautiful lights of the city. We were preparing for landing at LAX, Daniel was asleep in the seat next to mine. After my mother passed from the car crash it was agreed that I would go to the valley and live with Daniel and his family. It's what my mom would want. I was scheduled to start middle school in new york in 2 weeks, but now i'll be starting with Sam at her fancy private school. I hate the way things change.

Me and Sam sit on the floor of Daniels private karate room. He told us he would teach us to spar today. It's been almost a year since mom died. I'm starting to like life here in the valley, I know it's what she would want. Sam is like a sister to me now, and we have a great friend group at school. Sometimes uncle Daniel teaches us karate from when he was a kid, I think i like it more than she does. I wish i could show mom.
