NOTHING EXISTED before that moment, but there were a couple of things that she remembered about the evening. The loss of circulation that she felt from that tight ass ponytail. The itchiness of her hoodie and the chafing of her jeans. The scent of her mother's cooking as she stepped downstairs. The Sonic-like speed that she tried to run out the house and the pit in her stomach when she got caught,

"Saraphine!" A thick Malian accent yelled as she came to a halt.

She turned around but stayed near the front door, "Yeah, Mama?"

There was a couple moments of silence before she spoke again, "Come."

She will never understand how one word could have so much weight and power in it. Just the tone in her mother's voice commanded a level of authority. Maybe it just came with the territory of being a parent. Having the ability to instill fear in your child at any given moment. She was slow and hesitant in her steps. The heat of the kitchen wafted over her as she got closer,

She tried to keep her distance from the boiling pot. It was stupid being that she probably couldn't go anyways. But she still didn't want the smell to linger on her clothes, "Yeah?"

Her mannerisms remained calm but there was a brewing storm in her voice, "Where you about to go somewhere?"

Saraphine's gaze fell to the floor as she replied, "Yeah, I was gonna go to Aurora's house,"

It was this response that made her mother turn to her, "When were you gonna tell me? By the time you came back?"

If she could lower her gaze into hell, she probably would have, "I was gonna tell you."

"When? Tomorrow? Weren't you the same one preaching about honesty? And I know what goes on in that side of town and especially at that house."

She tried not roll her eyes as her gaze remained on the wooden floor, "You say that 'side of town' like we don't live two streets away. But it doesn't matter, I know I'm not going anyways."
