Chapter Twenty-three

[Ben POV]

We've been traveling for a few minutes now, and everyone's pants have slowly become normal breathing.

Y/N leans on me, her eyes closed in weariness, and I lay my head on hers.

"It's over." Darius sighs. "Guys, we did it. We're going home."

There's a momentary stunned silence, as if we're all still waiting for it to sink in, then Y/N opens her eyes and gives a weak cheer.

"Woo hoo!" Sammy jumps up and pumps her fist.

Bumpy squeals happily.

"Yeah! Whoo!" Darius whoops

"Yes!" Brooklyn beams.

I kick back my legs and raise my arms. "Yeah!"

Darius walks over to Kenji and puts a hand on his shoulder. "It's cool, man. We're good. We'll be at the main dock soon."

"This calls for a celebration." Brooklyn says with a smile.

I smirk slightly, although it feels weird to do it since I don't do that much.
"I might be able to help with that."

I carefully unzip my fanny pack as to not damage it and pull out 6 carob bars. "Stashed a few for the road."

"Ooh! Sweet!"

"I'm starving!"

"Our little Ben is so useful."

Everyone grabs one each from my hands, only leaving one for me and
Y/N.

"Here you go N/N." I hand her the chocolate bar. "You need it more than I do."

She smiles at me. "You're so thoughtful, Ben! But we can just share, you know."

I rip open the wrapper, and Y/N takes a bite. Just when I'm about to bite too, the both of us hear a retching noise come from Sammy.

Brooklyn, Darius, Kenji, and Yaz are also spitting and retching in disgust.

"What's the problem with them?" Y/N frowns in confusion.

"This is nasty."

"Get it off, get it off!"

"Ben, someone stole your candy bars and put dirt in them." Sammy says.

Y/N chuckles at what she'd said. "It's not dirt. Ben, you explain." She says, closing her eyes and leaning back.

"They're carob bars. They pair perfectly with--"

Darius cuts me off with a juice box in his hand. "--carob juice. Great.."

"Carob is nature's chocolate. Just as delicious, with none of the sugar or caffeine." I explain patiently.

"What's wrong with sugar and caffeine?" Brooklyn says. "First thing I'm gonna do when I get home is hug my espresso machine. I may never even let go."
