A/N: Most of the conversation in Chapters 1-3 is taken from the series. Please read the tags carefully. This fic is a fix-it with major character death and a cliffhanger ending because I've been writing it since 2022 and don't have a plan to write the next season yet.

"I curse you," Esther choked as her son's fingers tightened around her neck. Her eyes bulged, tears streaming down her cheeks. "You'll taste the pain you caused a thousandfold!"

"How could you do this to me? Do I mean nothing to you? I'm your son!" Klaus shouted, his voice hoarse and filled with rage. "Do you think another curse can stop me? I'll break it all, just like I've broken everything else!"

"The love you crave will turn to ashes in your grasp! You are doomed to forever wound those you hold dearest. Yet, you'll never learn from this cruel cycle." Esther's voice quivered with anguish. "This curse will strip away any happiness you find, leaving you condemned to eternal loneliness."

"Shut up!" Klaus roared. His fingers clenched tighter around his mother's neck until her chest ceased to rise. A sudden gust of wind swept through the room, momentarily flickering the flames before they roared back to life, brighter than before.

Her body fell to the ground, her brown eyes wide, reflecting the orange flames in the nearby brazier. The sound of rattling wood echoed throughout the room, masking his sobs.

He left the house where he had lived all his life, taking only his trust in his siblings and the belief that "Father is the one who killed mother."

"There you are," the brunette vampire said, watching the history teacher enter the boarding house. The atmosphere was tense and filled with worry, unlike Klaus in Alaric's body, who wore a mischievous smirk.

"Sorry, I'm late," Klaus answered smoothly.

"Hey, I need you to put me down as a chaperone at the dance tonight. Klaus made his first move." Damon's face lit up, his blue eyes shining with a hint of satisfaction.

Elena cut in, "Okay, so we find him, and then what? What's our plan of attack?"

The witch answered confidently, "Me." She squared her shoulders. "I'm the plan. He has no idea how much power I can channel. If you can find him, I can kill him."

Witches talked about killing with such casualness that Elena's eyebrows rose in surprise. She looked toward her teacher for his opinion.

"That's not going to be easy," Klaus said with a dry chuckle, hiding a flicker of amusement at their naive plan. "I mean, he is the biggest, baddest vampire around."

"Alaric has a point," Damon agreed, then turned to the witch. "What if he..." He lunged at Bonnie, but she easily flung him across the room with a flick of her wrist.

"Well, I was impressed," Stefan admitted, his gaze resting on his girlfriend and the witch.

"It doesn't matter if he's original. I can take down anyone who comes at me," the witch declared. "I can kill him, Elena. I know I can."

A confident smile passed between her and the relieved doppelgänger. They smiled at each other innocently, unaware that the source of their problems was standing right next to them.

Klaus grimaced, his eyes darting around the dance floor, between bobbing heads and flashing lights.

The air pulsed with thumping music, interspersed with peals of laughter. The sweet perfume clashed with the sharp scent of sweat, creating a nauseating cocktail of fragrances. Couples were writhing in a dimly lit nook.
