From the isolationist native american tribes of the Frozen North to the individuals who have integrated fully into human society, all shapeshifters have one thing in common: the ability to shift - or transform - into any animal species. The nature of that other sapient species is believed to be genetic, passed down through the patrilineal line or the matrilineal line.
